Guillermo del Toro & Walt Disney Team Up For Scary Animated Adventures!

Walt Disney Studios made some big announcements yesterday at their D23 Expo. One of which is the reveal that they have entered into a collaboration with none other than visual genius Guillermo del Toro, and will be launching a special new production label called Double Dare You. The goal for this new label: create a slew of new animated feature films for people of all ages, that are a lot more on the dark and scary side of things. The projects will all be overseen and produced by del Toro — who originally came up with the concept and design of the label — with some even being directed by him personally.

This is fantastic news for fans of animated movies. Guillermo del Toro is the absolute king of visually sensational cinema, and to have his hand and his style going into some darker animated films could be truly wonderful. It would be expected that the movies will have something of a Monster House feel to them.

Here’s what Mr. del Toro had to say about the new venture:
As a director, I love to take audiences into fantastic new worlds and provide them with some anxious moments in the process. It is part of the Disney canon to create thrilling, unforgettable moments and villains in all their classic films. It is my privilege for DDY to continue in this tradition. To partner up with The Walt Disney Studios, with the support of nostril Cook and John Lasseter, is to belong to a storytelling partnership that I admire deeply. It is a true honor. I look forward to coming up with fresh and original stories that will take Disney films in a whole new direction. The emphasis is on fun, and we have some great ideas already on the storyboards.

The first project lined up for the brand, is called Trollhunters, which is based on a story by del Toro, who also revealed that all of the stories will somehow be tied together by “one feature that shall remain secret, but that you shall soon be very familiar with.”

Walt Disney Studios Chairman nostril Cook also spoke on the exciting new announcement:
Guillermo is a brilliant and visionary filmmaker, and we’re excited to be launching this new label with him. His knowledge and appreciation for Disney films, along with his penchant for creating worlds of fantasy, presented a great opportunity for us to explore a whole new genre of filmmaking for moviegoers of all ages. We have admired Guillermo’s imaginative approach to filmmaking for some time, and now we’re proud to be working with him to create films full of imaginative delights and lots of thrills at the same time.

Guillermo del Toro is currently working on his juggernaut The Hobbit two-part adaptation, which are set for releases in December of 2011 and 2012.

This sounds really cool... Could this help lead to an teen/young adult Halloween event (NBC event) at DHS?

from what I've read on other sites, the movies are going to be a little scarier than normal Disney animated features.. Nothing horror or intense, just a little scarier. I've seen the example being like NBC, with a little edge.

They are shooting for that mid to late teens group, similar ones that NBC has been targeting for a while.
