Disney to launch new preschooler network in 2012

Here’s a news tidbit that kind of flew under our radar here in Orlando this week. But it’s something that many parents no doubt will want to know more about in the future.

Especially if they like preschooler TV programming on Disney Channel, such as Mickey Mouse Clubhouse and Handy Manny (above).

On Wednesday, the Disney-ABC Television Group announced that its SOAPnet channel will be replaced with Disney Junior, a 24-hour channel that will focus on preschoolers. The new network will air in 2012.

According to reports by The Associated Press and The Los Angeles Times, the new network will compete with Viacom’s Nick Jr. channel and will focus its educational and entertainment programming for kids age 2 to 7. It also will get some cross-promotion efforts from the Disney Channel’s preschooler program block Playhouse Disney.

According to other reports, the channel will have both new series and also current Disney Channel programs such as Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, Handy Manny and Imagination Movers.

An analysis in the cable television publication Broadcasting & Cable says the move by Disney is a promising one in a crowded field and that the timing of the announcement may have some connection with Disney’s upcoming ESPN 3D project.

You can read more from that report here. And here’s Disney’s press release about the move with more details.

Disney is rolling out different networks for different demographics... why not a Disney Legacy network that shows that old cartoons, shows, and movies (movies that they haven't already sold the rights to other networks). A network just for the 30 and over age range...

I'm all for your suggestion. But let's make that "Way over 30". Bring back Swamp Fox, Zorro, Spin and Marty and anything with Annette.
