Last year it was announced and construction began on a new kennel for pets, across from the Port Orleans resort (PO: French Quarter for the non-purists Smile ). In a recent Disney press released, it appears that once this new facility is open, all of the park kennel facilities will be closed.

Five existing in-park kennels to close when new facility opens this summer?

A press release issued today by Disney appears to indicate that the 5 existing kennels in the parks and at Fort Wilderness will close once the new pet care facility opposite Port Orleans Resort opens this summer.

Here is the full release:

"Slated for a late-summer opening, a full-service luxury pet care facility on Bonnet Creek Parkway across from Disney’s Port Orleans Resort will provide a comfortable home-away-from-home for Fido, Frisky and all their pet pals! The one-of-a-kind facility will be able to accommodate up to 270 dogs in a variety of standard and luxury suites, some with private outdoor patios and play yards. The separate “Kitty City” pavilion will be able to house up to 30 cats in two- and four-story cat condos. A special room is also available for the boarding of “pocket pets,” Including pet hamsters and birds.

The facility, to be operated by Best Friends Pet Care, will comprise more than 17,000 square feet of air-conditioned indoor space plus 10,000 square feet of covered outdoor runs and play areas. It will replace the five existing pet care facilities throughout Walt Disney World Resort and will be open to both Walt Disney World Resort guests and visitors staying off-property."

So does this mean when you have to return to walk your dog, you have to leave the park, drive to the kennel and then return when you are done? And aren't you supposed to walk your dog three times a day? Dunno, never boarded a dog at one of the kennels, so I am not sure...

I can see where this will be a big cost savings, and free up space where the existing kennels are used for other things, but it does seem a bit more out of the way for folks guesting pets. But the converse of that is most parks don't even offer this.

My understanding when they first annouced this a few years ago was that this would be a deluxe kennel for animals and the park kennels under outside ownership would continue. But, they way it reads now, it looks like this one kennel will be the only one. I don't know about the convienience and cost of the new one, and if the price range might make it a little budget unfriendly.

The picture of the girl showing the cat the fish...

Was that snack time for the cat or terror time for the fish? Cat seemed interested.

Wonder what the market is for boarding people's fish when they go on vacation?
